Guardian Unlimited Technology | Technology | Breaking America's grip on the net

Very interesting article about who should control the Internet.

The Internet may not have been invented by Al Gore, but it was invented by the American government. The U.S. Department of Defense developed something called the ARPANET which laid the groundwork for and in some ways became the Internet as we know it today (as far as I understand, that is--not my area of expertise, just something I'm interested in).

While the Internet is an American creation, it has become a global enterprise. Besides the hundreds of millions of private Internet users, many countries rely heavily on the Internet for the operation of their respective governments.

So, who should call the shots about how it works? The U.S. alone as the creator, or a consortium of nations?

This is certainly not the last we've heard of this debate.
